How to open your site before you point your domain name to us

You have just opened an account with us and you have uploaded your site to your account. Now you wish to open your site before you point your domain name to us, to test it out.

Here is how - just hardwire the IP to the domain name on your computer. Edit the HOSTS file on your machine:

  • Windows: click Start, Run, type:

notepad %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

and press Enter

  • Mac: open the Terminal application, and run this command at the prompt:

sudo nano /private/etc/hosts

  • Linux: the HOSTS file location depends on the Linux flavor, usually it is in /etc/hosts

After you have opened the HOSTS file in an editor, then insert these two lines at its end:

12.34.56.78  YOURDOMAIN.com

12.34.56.78  WWW.YOURDOMAIN.com

Remember to change 12.34.56.78 with the IP of your account - check your Welcome email for this information, or contact our support - and YOURDOMAIN.com and WWW.YOURDOMAIN.com with your domain name.

Then save the file and open your domain name in a browser - you will access it on our servers.

To reverse this change just comment out the lines you added to the HOSTS file with a # sign in front of them, as in

#12.34.56.78  YOURDOMAIN.com

If you need more information then please do not hesitate to contact us at support@solid-hosting.net.
